The Tempsford Museum and Archives
The Tempsford Museum and Archives was opened in July 2013 and houses a vast collection of memorabilia, artefacts, deeds, estate maps, newspaper articles, family papers, photographs, books and letters associated with the village of Tempsford.
These have been collected over more than twenty years by local amateur village historian Steve Cooney. This, combined with family papers and artefacts owned by the Gosling family whom have been in the village for over 400 years, means the archive is quite substantial.
Together Steve Cooney and Carole Gosling came up with the idea that the collections needed to be managed by a group of trustees to look after it for the long term future and so the Museum and Archive was born. The trustees are a group of enthusiastic members of the community, who will ensure that the collection and any future additions to the collection are looked after and protected for posterity.
The trustees are bound by a legal small charities constitution which ensures the collection is protected for the long term future, and that it is made accessible to the public.
Supporting the trustees are a group called the Friends of Tempsford Museum. Membership of which entitles you to free entry to the museum and archives, whenever it is open, also members get half price entry to any extra events, talks or exhibitions that are planned in the future, and the right to vote at the AGM held each year.
Membership does not put anyone under any legal or general obligations, but the money raised through membership fees, helps the group to plan ahead, knowing that there will be a regular income for the Museum and Archives to cover ongoing costs. It also helps the trustees to build a fund towards purchasing any items on the open market, deemed to be of historical value to the archives.
